Police Begin Crackdown on Unauthorised Number Plates in Rivers
The Rivers State Police Command has announced a statewide enforcement operation targeting vehicles with covered, obscured, defaced, unauthorised, or missing registration number plates.
In a press release issued on Monday June 15, 2026 by the Police Public Relations Officer, Agabe Blessing, the Command said the exercise will commence on Monday, June 15, 2026, in line with directives from the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu.

According to the statement, the move is aimed at enhancing public safety, strengthening security, and preventing criminal elements from concealing their identities through the use of altered or hidden number plates.
Consequently, the Commissioner of Police in Rivers State, Olugbenga Adepoju, has directed all Area Commanders and Divisional Police Officers to ensure strict enforcement across their jurisdictions.
The Command warned that any vehicle found in violation will be impounded, while offenders will face prosecution in accordance with existing laws.
Motorists have therefore been advised to ensure their number plates are properly fixed, clearly visible, and free from any obstruction or alteration to avoid sanctions.
The Police also cautioned officers involved in the operation to act professionally and respect citizens’ rights, stressing that any form of harassment, intimidation, or extortion will not be tolerated.
The Command reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining law and order and urged residents to report complaints through its designated emergency lines.
