Opobo Kingdom Sets for Historic Coronation of King Jeki VI
Opobo Kingdom will enter a new chapter on Saturday, September 26, 2026, as it prepares to formally crown His Royal Majesty, King Charles Douglas MacPepple Jaja, Jeki VI, as Amanyanabo and Treaty King.
The Opobo Council of Chiefs made the formal announcement on Monday, September 14, 2026, during a press briefing held in Port Harcourt. The council said the ceremony in Opobo Town will mark both continuity and renewal for one of the Niger Delta’s oldest thrones.
The throne traces its legacy to King Jaja of Opobo, remembered for courage, enterprise, diplomacy and leadership. Council leaders said the coronation of Jeki VI affirms that heritage while opening a new phase for the kingdom’s institutions and people.
Ahead of the grand day, the council has embarked on a round of traditional and diplomatic visits. The engagements are intended to strengthen historic ties and deliver formal invitations to the event.
Among those visited was former President Goodluck Jonathan. Other respected kings and traditional rulers across the region have also been briefed, according to the council.
The council described the coronation as more than a royal rite. It said the event will showcase Opobo’s culture, history and institutions, and create a moment for indigenes at home and in the diaspora to rally around the throne.
An open invitation has been extended to the people of Rivers State, Nigerians, friends of Opobo and the international community to join the celebration. The media was also called upon to document the story of Opobo’s heritage, resilience and leadership.
Vice Chairman of the council, Princewill Dappa, said logistics teams are working on security, traffic, protocol and guest coordination. He urged journalists to be in Opobo Town on September 26 to witness and report what the council described as a defining moment for the kingdom.
