Nigerian Stars Yira Sor and David Okereke Begin New Chapters With Fresh Transfer Moves

Two Nigerian forwards, two different destinations, and one big opportunity to get their careers moving in the right direction.

Yira Sor and David Okereke have both secured new moves, with the Nigerian attackers set to begin fresh chapters in Turkey and Italy respectively.

While Sor is heading to newly promoted Amedspor, Okereke is returning to Serie B with Benevento. For both players, these transfers could prove important as they look to rediscover consistency and make a bigger impact.

Yira Sor Joins Amedspor in Turkey

Yira Sor has officially completed his move from Belgian Pro League side Genk to Amedspor, giving the newly promoted Turkish club another Nigerian attacking option.

Amedspor confirmed the signing through its official channels, welcoming the 26-year-old winger as they prepare for their first-ever campaign in the Turkish Super Lig.

Sor’s departure from Genk had been anticipated after three-and-a-half years with the Belgian club.

He joined Genk from Slavia Prague in January 2023, but injuries disrupted his time in Belgium and made it difficult for him to establish himself as a regular figure.

Now, Turkey offers Sor a chance to turn the page.

And there is already a familiar face waiting for him.

The Nigerian winger will join forces with fellow Super Eagles forward Gift Orban, who recently arrived at Amedspor on a season-long loan from Hoffenheim.

That gives Amedspor two Nigerian attackers to call upon as they face the challenge of competing in the Turkish top flight for the first time.

For Sor, the objective is straightforward: stay fit, play regularly and show the form that convinced Genk to sign him in the first place.

Having made his Super Eagles debut in March 2026, the move also gives him another platform to strengthen his international ambitions.

Okereke Returns to Italy With Benevento

While Sor is beginning a new adventure in Turkey, David Okereke is heading back to familiar territory.

The 28-year-old Nigerian striker has completed his transfer to Benevento Calcio, signing a contract that runs until June 30, 2028, with an option that could extend the agreement through June 2029.

For Okereke, this is more than just another club change. It is a return to the competition where he first made a serious name for himself.

The Lagos-born forward began his senior career in Italy with Lavagnese before moving to Spezia. His breakthrough arrived during the 2018/19 Serie B campaign, when he registered 10 goals and 12 assists in 33 league appearances.

That season changed the direction of his career.

His performances earned him a move to Club Brugge in Belgium, where he went on to experience domestic success and European football.

Okereke was part of Club Brugge’s championship-winning sides and featured in the UEFA Champions League before eventually returning to Italy with Venezia.

He scored seven goals in 32 Serie A appearances during the 2021/22 season, before Cremonese brought him back permanently to the Italian top flight in 2022.

Another seven Serie A goals followed in his first season with Cremonese, while subsequent spells with Torino and Turkish club Gaziantep added further experience to his career.

His time in Turkey was particularly productive during the 2024/25 campaign, when he scored eight league goals in 29 Süper Lig appearances.

Okereke then returned to Cremonese for the 2025/26 season, making 10 Serie A appearances and scoring twice.

Now, Benevento represents another reset.

Interestingly, Okereke already knows what it is like to face the club. During his Spezia days, he scored twice in a 3-1 victory over Benevento in November 2018.

This time, however, he will be wearing the Benevento shirt.

Sor and Okereke arrive at their new clubs with very different experiences behind them.
