When wastes are effectively managed at the workplace, safety is enhanced and health of workers is assured, the Wastes Management Society of Nigeria (WAMASON) has said as it joins the global community to mark the World Safety and Health Day 2023.

The World Day for Safety and Health at Work, which significance is etched in achieving a conducive work environment and occupational safety and health, is observed on April 28 every year and is related to the International Workers’ Day, otherwise known as Labour Day.

Chief Essien noted that there was the need for relevant stakeholders involved in managing workplaces from employers to employees to rally around the objectives of the World Day for Safety and Health at Work, which “is concerned about safe work and awareness of the dimensions and consequences of work-related accidents and diseases”.

He stressed that this includes “working towards placing occupational safety and health (OSH) on the international and national agendas; and to provide support to the national efforts for the improvement of national OSH systems and programmes in line with relevant international labour standards”.

He explained that “best practices in waste management should include segmenting different types of wastes and containing them, deciding the best method of disposing of wastes, and ensuring that such disposal processes do not constitute public health hazards to humans, animals or vegetation”.

He called on relevant regulatory institutions in Nigeria and globally to be alive to their responsibilities of ensuring wastes are properly packaged, managed and disposed of, indicating that WAMASON was ever ready to partner with relevant institutions and organizations to achieve this objective.
