The Chairman of Bonny Local Government Area, Dame Anengi Barasua says a robust partnership with the Bonny Gentlemen’s League (BGL) and other critical stakeholders will do Bonny Island a world of good, especially, when predicated on a clear and mutually agreed development template.

Dame Barasua said this while delivering a keynote address on Saturday, December 24, 2022 at an Open Forum/Town Hall Meeting organized by the BGL as part of its 43rd Annual Convention at the Women’s Hall, Bonny.

Speaking on a subtopic titled, “Synergy For Fast-Tracking Development”, the Bonny LGA boss stated that the parameters would include mobility support for security agents, feedback mechanism, improved accessibility to villages, screening and profiling of tenants and utilizers of properties, information sharing, restructuring of drainage systems on private properties, role modeling of adherence to the rule of law, compliance with extant property development laws, and proposition of development roadmap.

“I have carefully spelt out some ways the Bonny Gentlemen’s League can step up in synergy with Bonny LGA with a view to fast-track development, thus;

1. Support the mobility of security agents in both land and sea with as little as petroleum products, welfare packages, and relevant information.

2. show concern, you can report to relevant authorities on bad passenger boat engines and follow up to ensure that they do not operate until they are fixed.

3. Today most of us have deserted our villages for fear of the unknown leaving our aged ones vulnerable to invading strangers and security uncertainties. We can help to clear the bushes and creeks around this areas to avoid the establishment of criminal camps.

4. Most of us here are landlords to criminals and persons with questionable character; we do not take time to screen our intending tenant before accommodating them in our properties.

5. Participate in the sharing of relevant information that will support the operations of government security agencies.

6. Like we mentioned earlier on poor sanitation culture, most of our houses have its waste channels to public drainages. This is the height of primitivism and irresponsibility. We need to start changing our sanitary lifestyle, we need rethink and envision Bonny as a tourist center. You can restructure your drainage systems. Help Government to help you.

7. The general public will align with government rules, regulations and programmes if they find noble men like you doing same. It will surprise you to know that some respected men of substance and calibers still violates the order on Okada ban after 8pm, in disregard to government regulation. This is not the spirit of synergy; we can do better.

 8. It is disheartening to find that in a modern society like Bonny, we still have illegal structures under high tension, on drainages and pipeline right-of-ways. In the spirit of development, we are encouraged to always seek government consent and approval before putting up any structure. Bonny of my dream is a city set on a hill, with beautiful infrastructure, a recreational hub and an investment center.

9. I consider the Bonny Gentlemen’s League as a pressure group, which should be proposing roadmaps for the journey to development. For example, the Bodo-Bonny Road is almost with us, what is next? How do we control vehicular and human traffic? How do we utilize the opportunity for our collective good? How do we protect our cultural heritage, especially, the Ibani language given that the influx of people with different native tongues may distort the concentration in Ibani? Your advisory role needs to be brought alive.”

Since its inception on Thursday, October 14, 2021, the Dame Anengi Barasua administration has mainstreamed improved governance in Bonny LGA by stamping its development footprint across the island LGA, upscaling stakeholder management and grassroots engagement, all geared towards unbundling democratic dividends to the people of the area.

The BGL organized Open Forum/Town Hall Meeting provided her the leverage to outline her administration’s achievements in office and solicit needed synergy towards consolidating on milestones reached so far.
