Udoka Godwin-Malife signs for Reading FC to spearhead a bold new League One era

Reading Football Club have officially completed the signing of Nigerian defender Udoka Godwin-Malife from fellow League One side Burton Albion on a three-year contract.

Udoka Godwin-Malife unveiled as Reading's new versatile defender

The 26-year-old centre-back, who has become the second summer signing of the Royals, arrives after captaining Burton last season.

He played a key role in their campaign, making 88 appearances, scoring three goals, and registering seven assists during his impressive two-year spell.

Why Udoka Godwin-Malife signs for Reading

The Oxford-born defender, affectionately known as ‘Dokes’, is no stranger to success, having previously won League Two with Forest Green Rovers in 2022 and featured for Swindon Town.

Now preparing for another grueling League One campaign and settling into life at Bearwood, the powerful defender’s impressive journey continues as he takes on a fresh challenge, adding another chapter to the growing list of Nigerian players making major moves across Europe.

Speaking after his arrival, Udoka told RoyalsTV:

“I am delighted be here and finally be a Royal. I can’t wait to get started. The magnitude of the club [helped me choose Reading], it’s a big club.

I had chats with the Gaffer as well and the project was sold to me. As soon as I came off the call with the Gaffer, it was instant. I want to be a part of what is coming.”

“It has been a few months [in the making], it has not been a quick turnaround. I am delighted it is finally over the line, and I cannot wait to get started.”

Familiar faces await as Godwin-Malife signs for Reading

Familiarity will play a massive part in helping the new man hit the ground running at RG2.

It is highly reassuring for him to join a squad where he already shares a history with key personnel, expressing strong hope that they will help him settle in quickly as he looks to make an immediate impact on the pitch.

Reflecting on his existing dressing room bonds, he noted:

“I have a few people here that I know. I know Big Kelvin, I grew up with him and he’s a close family friend. I played with [Benn] Wardy at Swindon, a great character and a great player. I was with Charlie [Savage] at Forest Green, who is also a great player.”

When asked to give a word for those who aren’t fully aware of his career and style of play, the dynamic defender offered an exciting tactical insight:

“I am versatile, I can play wing-back, right-back or centre-half. I am a pacy, right-sided defender who likes to break lines and bring the ball forward to start attacks. I love one-versus-one defending as well.”

Supporters are unlikely to have to wait long to see their new defensive star in action, with Leam Richardson’s side opening their pre-season account at Farnborough in a fortnight.
