Super Eagles Star Leon Balogun Completes Move to Hungarian Club ETO FC Győr
Super Eagles defender Leon Balogun has officially signed for Hungarian top-flight club ETO FC Győr, opening a new chapter in a career that has spanned some of Europe’s most competitive leagues.
The experienced Nigerian centre-back joins the Hungarian outfit after a season with Cypriot side Aris Limassol, where he impressed with his consistency and leadership.
Despite being 38 years old, Balogun remains one of Nigeria’s most accomplished defenders, boasting an impressive career across Germany, England, Scotland, and Cyprus.
Born in Berlin, the Super Eagles star began his professional journey in Germany before making his mark in the Bundesliga.
During spells with Hannover, Werder Bremen, and Mainz, he accumulated 75 Bundesliga appearances and established himself as one of the league’s dependable defenders, particularly during his successful stint at Mainz between 2015 and 2018.
His performances earned him a move to Premier League club Brighton & Hove Albion in 2018. Although injuries restricted his playing time, Balogun still made eight league appearances and memorably scored his only Premier League goal in a victory over Crystal Palace in December 2018.
The Nigerian international enjoyed arguably the most successful period of his club career with Scottish giants Rangers.
Across two spells between 2020 and 2025, he featured in 65 matches and played a key role in helping the Glasgow side win the Scottish Premiership title in his debut campaign.
He also lifted the Scottish Cup in 2022 and the Scottish League Cup in 2024.
Last season, Balogun represented Aris Limassol, making 22 appearances while contributing two goals and an assist before sealing his switch to Hungary.
Speaking after completing the move, Balogun described the transfer as an exciting opportunity and said he was delighted to become an ETO FC player.
He praised the team’s encouraging start to the season, adding that maintaining high standards would be essential if the club is to build on last year’s achievements.
The Super Eagles defender also expressed his eagerness to begin working with his new teammates and pledged to contribute everything he has, both on the field and behind the scenes, as ETO FC Győr look to achieve their goals this season.
