Students at the Rivers State University, Port Harcourt have raised alarm over the incessant increase in the tuition fee as well as other bills.

One of them, Abigail Obibo, a final year student of Education, told Kristina Reports on Saturday, January 13, 2024, at the institution’s campus that the increase in the tuition fee is highly outrageous as it will negatively affect students.

Vice Chancellor, Rivers State University, Professor Nlerum Okogbule

“As a final year student, I’m supposed to pay either 40,000 or 45,000 but now, additional 20,000 has been added to the fee.”

Abigail also decried the increase in the house rent, saying that house owners are just using it to undo students.

“As for house rents, before I pay N7,000 per month but now it’s N10,000. I don’t know if it’s because of the population of the school, and probably students are rushing to secure houses for themselves. I don’t know if the landlords are trying to be greedy.”

Abigail also mentioned that it will affect her and her academics, asserting that this will make many students to indulge in various crimes to make ends meet.

Speaking also, Godbless Abereniboye, a 400 level Engineering student told Kristina Reports that the prices vary as he’s fee was increased by 14,600.

“The school fees was formally 60,000, but now it has been increased 70,600. Also the house, formerly I was paying 200,000 now, I’m to pay 250,000.”

“The economy of the country is unstable and it’s affecting me. Increasing the fees at this point in time is adding more stress and burden to my guardians providing for me.”

Speaking also, a final year student who pleaded anonymity said that it’s a challenging period for everybody and this will only worsened situations.

“What do they want from us, they should just kill us at once, look at me, a final year student, I will still buy books, do assignments, write project, and buy suit for my project, and they are still increasing school fees. Where do I start from?”

Another student, who refused to disclose her identity, complained of how pain she is about the development.

“I have been crying since because my mother cannot afford it. I have six siblings and it’s just my mother who is a petty trader that is catering for all of us.”

“I just want to graduate but with this, I don’t know how to break this news to my mother, she will be too sad. I have to pay house rent too and I know they may increase other bills.”

Efforts by Kristina Reports to reach the management of the university to get their reaction proved abortive as at the time of this report.
