ICAN, FPOG Partner on Capacity Building for Accountants

The Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN) Bonny Kingdom and District Society has indicated its readiness to synergize with the Federal Polytechnic of Oil and Gas (FPOG), Bonny in deepening the knowledge and practice of Accountancy in Bonny Local Government Area of Rivers State.  

Chairman of the ICAN Bonny Kingdom and District Society, Dr Samuel Ekong gave this indication when he led a delegation comprising his executive and some members on a courtesy visit to the Rector of the Federal Polytechnic of Oil and Gas (FPOG), Bonny, Professor Tamunoimi Abbey, in Bonny on Friday, June 4, 2021.

He explained that this move will not only deepen the practice of Accountancy but also grow the number of professionals in the field in the area, saying that the key strategy was to inculcate in students of the institution the passion for Accountancy starting with securing accreditation of the course by the National Universities Commission (NUC).   

“We will work with ICAN to satisfy requirements to get this institution accredited as my entire executive have enlisted to be part-time facilitators of the Accounting Department. We are going to bring the activities of the profession into the community”.

Dr Ekong further explained that the move to collaborate with the polytechnic was in response to calls for raising young minds with the mission of inculcating the ICAN vision into the tertiary education system, noting that this would stimulate the desire of students in the profession.

He expressed the expression of his executive and members on the efforts of the Rector and Management of the Institution towards the inauguration of the ICAN Bonny Kingdom and District Society and his investiture as pioneer Chairman, noting that this was the aim of the courtesy call, which was also envisaged as an opportunity to familiarize with the institution and its management on areas of mutual benefit.

“The Institution has given ICAN a soft landing in Bonny Island, giving us a hall for our inauguration and giving us an office,” the ICAN Bonny District Chairman stated, expressing their commitment towards the growth and development of the polytechnic.

Responding to his guests, the Rector of the Federal Polytechnic of Oil and Gas (FPOG), Bonny, Professor Tamunoimi Abbey expressed his gratitude for the visit and to Dr Samuel Ekong and his executive and members for identifying with the FPOG and the proposals made to aid academic development within the institution.

“Education is comprehensive and no knowledge is lost. Accounting is not only limited to students of the Accounting discipline, but a knowledge that is relevant to other fields of study.”

Recall that the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigerian (ICAN) attained another milestone on Friday, May 15, 2021, when the 56th President of ICAN, Onome Adewuyi, FCIB, FCA, performed the inauguration of the ICAN Bonny Kingdom and District Society and investiture of Dr Samuel Ekong as the pioneer Chairman of the new district.
