Rangers Crowned NPFL Champions as Rivers United Fall Short, Remo Stars Suffer Relegation Heartbreak
After 38 thrilling matchdays in the 2025/26 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL), the curtain has finally fallen on another unforgettable season.
What unfolded on the final day was a mixture of joy, heartbreak, tension, and historic achievements as the title race, continental qualification battle, and relegation fight all went down to the wire.
At the end of an extraordinary campaign, Enugu Rangers emerged as champions, Rivers United were left wondering what could have been, Shooting Stars celebrated a long-awaited return to Africa, while Remo Stars suffered a devastating relegation blow.
Enugu Rangers Crown NPFL Campaign With Historic Ninth Title
Enugu Rangers travelled to Lagos knowing that a victory would guarantee the NPFL title regardless of results elsewhere.
Driven by the support of thousands of travelling fans who made the journey from Enugu, the Flying Antelopes approached the encounter with determination and purpose.
Their reward came through Chidiebere Nwobodo, who opened the scoring in the first half before grabbing his second shortly after the restart to put Rangers firmly in control of the title race.
Ikorodu City responded through Moses Ali in the 58th minute, setting up a nervy finish, but Rangers held their nerve to secure a crucial 2-1 victory and seal their ninth league title.
The triumph also marked another major achievement for coach Fidelity Ilechukwu, who has now delivered a second NPFL title in three seasons.
With domestic success secured, attention will now shift towards the continental stage, where the Coal City side will be expected to compete strongly and translate league dominance into success in CAF competition.
Ikorodu City Falls Short Despite Impressive Campaign
For Ikorodu City, the final whistle brought disappointment rather than celebration.
The Oga Boys entered the decisive fixture knowing that victory could secure a historic continental ticket in only their second season at the top level.
Although they fought bravely and pushed Rangers until the closing stages, their dream slipped away.
Despite the heartbreak, the Lagos Boys can only look back proudly on a remarkable season that established them among the league’s emerging forces.
Rivers United Win But Miss Out On The NPFL Crown
While Rangers celebrated in Lagos, Rivers United were taking care of business elsewhere.
The Port Harcourt side produced a dominant display, recording a convincing 3-0 victory to finish the campaign strongly.

Chijioke Mbaoma led the charge with goals in the third and 67th minutes, while Aniekeme Okon added another to complete the convincing win.
Every goal sparked hope among Rivers United supporters, but their title ambitions ultimately depended on Rangers dropping points.
That outcome never arrived.
Despite finishing as runners-up, Rivers United secured qualification for next season’s CAF Champions League and can take pride in another highly competitive campaign under Finidi George.
Shooting Stars End 26-Year Wait For Continental Football
One of the biggest success stories of the final day belonged to Shooting Stars.
The Ibadan club suffered a narrow 1-0 defeat against Niger Tornadoes after Abdulrasheed Shehu Dabai converted a first-half penalty.

Yet football often delivers unexpected twists.
Results from other centres worked perfectly in Shooting Stars’ favour, allowing the Oluyole Warriors to clinch a CAF Confederation Cup spot.
The achievement ends a 26-year absence from continental football and marks a significant milestone for one of Nigeria’s most historic clubs.
Remo Stars Suffer Last-Gasp Relegation Heartbreak
No storyline captured the cruelty of football more than the fate of Remo Stars.
Heading into their clash against Bendel Insurance, survival depended on securing all three points.
Victor Mbaoma’s first-half goal appeared enough to preserve their NPFL status as the Sky Blue Stars held on for much of the encounter.

However, deep into stoppage time, Chijioke Akuneto struck for Bendel Insurance to level the game at 1-1 and crush Remo Stars’ hopes in dramatic fashion.
One late goal changed everything.
The result condemned the Ikenne Boys to relegation and brought an emotional end to their stay in the top flight.
Joining them in the drop zone were Bayelsa United, Wikki Tourists and El-Kanemi Warriors.
Bayelsa United at least bowed out with a commanding 4-0 victory over Kwara United, with Peter Ebimobiwei, Saro Loveday, Stephen Wisdom and Nneoyi Ofem all finding the net.
Drama Across The League As Clubs End Season In Style
Elsewhere, Victor Dawa emerged as the star for Plateau United, scoring deep into stoppage time to secure a dramatic 1-0 victory over Kano Pillars.
Warri Wolves produced a superb comeback to defeat Abia Warriors 2-1. After conceding inside the opening minute through Imoh Obot, Wolves responded with a brace from Chisom Orji to complete the turnaround.
Barau FC continued their impressive rise with a convincing 3-0 victory over Nasarawa United.
Goals from Joseph Atule, Sunday Anthony and Adamu Hussein secured another memorable result for the newly promoted side.
Enyimba also ended the campaign on a high, defeating El-Kanemi Warriors 3-0 thanks to a Stanley Dimgba brace and a late strike from Uwana Asuquo.

Kun Khalifat completed an important 3-1 comeback victory against Wikki Tourists. Chijioke Onuaha scored twice, while Lekan Gabriel added the other goal to ensure the club retained its NPFL status.
Rangers, Rivers, Shooting, Ikorodu and Remo Stars Define Final Day Drama
When the dust finally settled, Enugu Rangers stood proudly at the summit of Nigerian football with a record-extending ninth league title.
Rivers United secured second place and a CAF Champions League ticket but were left agonisingly short in the title race.
Shooting Stars celebrated a historic return to continental football, while Ikorodu City narrowly missed out on a dream qualification spot.
For Remo Stars, however, the season ended in devastating fashion as relegation was confirmed in the final moments of the campaign.
The statistics reflected how competitive the season was. Rangers finished with 20 clean sheets, Rivers United recorded 19, while Ikorodu City ended the campaign with 18.
In the race for the Golden Boot, Victor Mbaoma finished level with Rangers forward Godwin Obaje on 14 goals, while Katsina United striker Uche Collins followed closely with 13.
The 2025/26 NPFL season delivered drama until its very last kick—an ending worthy of one of the most memorable seasons in recent history.
