The times may not be as usual in Bonny Kingdom of Rivers State with the affirmation of two COVID-19 cases in the island by the Chairman of Bonny Local Government Area, David Irimagha.

Recall that Kristina Reports broke the news on Friday that the National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) had returned two of the five samples taken for test as positive and three as negative for COVID-19 which had sparked off mixed reactions amongst close watchers.

Irimagha, who made this affirmation in a statement issued today, said that the cases were confirmed on Saturday, May 30, 2020 and that they were in stable condition at the Bonny COVID-19 Isolation Centre.

According to the statement, “As we speak on May 30th, 2020, we can report that Bonny LGA has recorded its first confirmed cases of the novel corona virus.

“We can equally confirm that the two confirmed cases are stable and are being quarantined at the Bonny COVID-19 Isolation Centre.”

He said, “Since the first cases of Covid-19 were recorded in Rivers State, Bonny Local Government has worked in line with the directives of the Rivers State Government to put in place safeguards to checkmate the spread of this deadly disease, these include our mandatory temperature checks at all entry points into Bonny, compulsory hand washing and use of alcoholic based hand sanitizers in public places, with health advisories placed at strategic points of the island, the closure of open markets and ban on all public gatherings, among other measures.”

The Bonny LG boss added that, “with the current situation on ground, the Bonny Local Government will be issuing revised guidelines to aid our people to understand this virus better and how they can help in preventing its spread further.”

Irimagha further reminded residents of Bonny Island on the indispensable need to “abide by all laid down rules and advisories by the Rivers State Government including regular hand washing, maintaining social distancing and the compulsory use of face masks, among others”.

He encouraged them to give their full cooperation to officials of the state and local government, NCDC and other relevant agencies that will be leading this fight.

The LG Council Boss, who urged all residents in Bonny Island to go about their legitimate businesses with care and caution, assured his constituents that government will keep them abreast of its evolving strategies, advisories and measures as progress sets in.
