Business prospects as well as other opportunities received boost as Ibom Air, the Akwa Ibom State airline begins daily flights on the Lagos-Accra aviation corridor.
Director General of the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), Musa Nuhu, who announced this on Thursday, September 21 2023 at the Banjul Accord meeting in Accra, Ghana, said the daily flights would begin from Tuesday, October 17, 2023.
He explained that it is a rare accomplishment as only a few airlines have been able to achieve this feat, expressing gratitude to the Ghanaian authorities for their cooperation, stating that this was made possible because of them.
“I think only about two or three airlines, United Airlines, Ibom Air and another have received the approval of the Civil Aviation Authority to start flying Ghana and I must thank the Ghanaian authorities for this.”
Nuhu pointed out that by flying from Lagos to Accra, Ibom Air will help to foster a deeper partnership and connectivity within both countries as well as other West African regions.
He opined that West African air routes are extremely disconnected and as such very expensive. He expressed hope in Ibom Air, noting that this will be the beginning of a new dawn for Nigeria, Ghana and West Africa as a whole.
“Generally, West Africa is one of most poorly connected regions of the world and one of the most expensive. If you are travelling from one country to the other, it can take you about 12 to 15 hours. Sometimes one has to fly to Europe in order to come back to a particular destination in West Africa.”
Ibom Air presently services five destinations within the country from its epicenter in Uyo and has made tremendous success since they began operation in 2019.
The company expects to have their flight schedule approved by the Ghana Civil Aviation Authority as well as the Ghana Airports Company Limited so as to commence flight activities in about a month’s time.
