Rivers State Police Command Takes Swift Action Against Officers Accused of Extortion”

The Rivers State Police Command has reaffirming its commitment to upholding the principles of credible policing, just as it issued an official update regarding a case involving three police officers accused of engaging in acts of extortion.

This was contained in a statement by the Public Relations Officer of the Command, Grace Iringe-Koko, a Superintendent of Police (SP), on Sunday, March 10, 2024 in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, which also stated that the discipline meted out to the erring officers underscored the Command’s commitment to transparent and accountable policing.

According to the statement, Michael Odey, an Inspector, was found guilty and dismissed from service following thorough proceedings and a comprehensive review conducted by the Assistant Inspector General of Police, Zone 16.

The statement further revealed that the dismissal, which takes effect from Wednesday, February 7, 2024, was announced during a press briefing on February 13, 2024.

In a subsequent development, Doubara Edonyabo and Talent Mungo, both Assistant Superintendents of Police (ASP), whose ranks required approval from the Inspector General of Police and the Police Service Commission, have been suspended from duty effective from February 29, 2024.

It added that “their salaries have also been stopped, pending further disciplinary action”.

“The implicated officers will face the Force Disciplinary Committee (FDC) responsible for addressing disciplinary issues involving senior officers. Updates will be provided in other cases involving these officers in due course.”
