The nine-time African Women’s Cup of Nations Champions, Super Falcons thumped Cape Verde 5-0 in the first leg of their 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations qualifying contest on Thursday, November 30, 2023, at the Moshood Abiola Stadium.

In a tie where the Super Falcons were tagged favourites to win, they wasted no time getting into it as Uchenna Kanu opened the scoring in the seventh minute via a tap-in from the edge of the box.

In the 16th minute, it was Chiamaka Nnadozie who made sure the lead was secure with a save to rip Cape Verde of an equalizer. Nine minutes after Nnadozie’s save, Gift Monday doubled the lead from a scramble in the opposition’s box. Rasheedat Ajibade tried to see the lead triple but was inches off the target.

At the stroke of halftime, Tony Payne set up Uchenna Kanu for a brace and the third of the game which saw the Super Falcons take a 3-0 lead at the break.

The second half saw the Nigerian side add more goals to the tally via two goals from Substitute, Esther Okoronkwo, the first was a fantastic finish off Akudo Ogbonna’s cross and the second off Rofiat Imuran’s cross.

It was a dominant performance from the Super Falcons and an outing to forget for visitors, Cape Verde, who would have a mile to cross in the reverse fixture slated for Praia next week on Tuesday, December 5, 2023.
