Recuperating from their 3-1 loss to Manchester City FC, Londoners, Arsenal FC were heavy handed Saturday afternoon as they thrashed Aston Villa FC 4-2 to retain their league leadership.
Aston Villa’s Ollie Watkins’ 5th minute and Philippe Coutinho’s 32nd minute goals were stoutly rebuffed by Arsenal’s daredevil squad of Bukayo Saka and Oleksandr Zinchenko, who scored on 16th and 61st minutes.
The duo of Martinez and Martinelli scored twice in stoppage time, precisely, the 93rd and 98th minutes to return the Gunners to top spot on the league table.
Today’s victory ended Arsenal’s no win run of three games and shot them back atop Manchester City after losing to them at mid-week.
Just 11 minutes after Villa scored, Arsenal responded with a powerful effort into the roof of the net by Saka, on the heels of Tyrone Mings’ clearance of Eddie Nketiah’s shot on to the bar.
Coutinho, who was making his first league start under former Arsenal manager, Unai Emery, put the hosts back in front, rounding off a wonderful team move with a calm finish from inside the area.
On the hour, Zinchenko found space at the edge of the box and fired in at the near post from a short corner for his first Arsenal goal, before Nketiah fired over minutes later.
Martin Odegaard shot wide with 14 minutes remaining and it looked as though it would not be Arsenal’s day until Jorginho and Martinelli’s vital contributions.
