Kelechi Iheanacho and Wilfred Ndidi went down with Leicester City joining Leeds and Southampton to exit the league. Iwobi and Everton survive by an inch.

Before the final day of the League, Manchester City had already retained the League Title. Manchester United and Newcastle already secured UCL places, while Liverpool and Brighton had locked their place in the UEFA Europa League.

Magpies ended their 20 years Champions League drought while Brighton would be playing European football for the first time in their history next year.

But the relegation battle was far from done as Everton, Leeds and Leicester all fought to stay up and avoid relegation but only one team could survive, and it was Everton after Doucouré’s goal in the 57th minute.

Tottenham, Aston Villa and Brentford all fought for seventh place in other to clinch the only Europa Conference League spot, a tight one but Villa squeezed their way through, with a 2-1 victory over Brighton.

Aston Villa finished in the top half of the Premier League for the first time since 2010/11 despite being 16th on the table in October before Unai Emery took over.

Chelsea on the other hand finished the season with their lowest points tally (44) since 1987-88 when they were relegated to the second tier (42), while it’s the Blue’s lowest league finish (12th) since 1993-94 (14th).

Taiwo Awoniyi played a huge role in keeping Forest from getting relegated, he scored his 10th Premier League goal of the season on the final day. Six of Awoniyi’s goals came in the last four games.

The Nigerian scored in eight Premier League games this season and it put Nottingham Forest 1-0 up in each match. The last player to open the scoring more times in a single season for a newly promoted club was Andrew Johnson with Crystal Palace in 2004-05

Iwobi and Everton Survive

Everton got a 1-0 victory against Bournemouth. Doucouré’s goal in the 57th minute was more than enough to keep the Toffees up and finish two points ahead of Leicester.

The Everton Gaffer, Sean Dyche had this to say:

“It means a lot to me. I took over what they called a broken club. It’s not broken, it’s had its cracks but it’s not broken. We’ve shown that. We’ve shown the fighting spirit that you need.”

Relegated Sides

18. Leicester City – Kelechi Iheanacho and Wilfred Ndidi go down

Seven years after winning the PL, Leicester are relegated.

Leicester went into matchday 38 in 18th position and with 31 points, and they needed a win against West Ham and a loss for Everton against Bournemouth to ensure their survival but it was not to be.

Despite playing their hearts out and getting a 2-1 victory over the Hammers, the Foxes bowed out of the Premier League courtesy of Everton’s win against Bournemouth.

Kelechi Iheanacho recorded an assist but said goodbye to the Premier League with his fellow Nigerian Wilfred Ndidi.

The Foxes exited the Premier League two points behind Everton, it was a poor season all round for the Dean Smith’s Men.

19. Leeds United

Unlike Leicester City, Leeds United did not get a win in their final game, instead, they were thumped by Tottenham Hotspur – 4 -1.

Sam Allardyce, widely known for his ability to save relegation-threatened sides, could not pull it off this time around.

Sam Allardyce: “We gifted three goals today. Two mins, gifted, could have been cleared. Do it exactly the same way in second half, huge disappointment. Jack scored a goal. What do we do again? You would have thought they would have learned from the first two.”

20. Southampton FC

The Saints said their goodbyes to the Premier League long before the close of the season.
