Vandal Electrocuted While Attacking Enugu Power Substation

A suspected vandal has been electrocuted while attempting to tamper with a power facility belonging to MainPower Electricity Distribution Limited in Enugu.

The incident occurred in the early hours of Tuesday at the Akonobi 500KVA Distribution Substation located along Independence Avenue, Independence Layout.

According to the company, the yet-to-be-identified suspect, alongside accomplices, had already loosened two intermediate cables and was attempting to remove a third when electricity supply was suddenly restored, leading to his electrocution.

The Head of Communications at MEDL, Emeka Ezeh, described the incident as unfortunate and raised concerns over the growing trend of vandalism targeting power infrastructure.

“It is presumed that the deceased did not act alone, as two of the vandalised intermediate cables were missing from the scene, indicating that his accomplices fled with them,” Ezeh said.

He warned that such criminal activities not only affect the company’s operations but also disrupt electricity supply to customers.

” It is a battle we must all fight collectively because once these installations are vandalised, customers served by them are severely impacted,” he stated.

Ezeh called on residents to remain vigilant and support efforts to safeguard critical infrastructure.

” It is hoped that the death of this young man, who paid the ultimate price with his life, will serve as a deterrent to others involved in such criminal activities,” he added.

The remains of the suspect have been evacuated by officers of the Nigerian Police Force and deposited at the morgue of the University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital.
