Palpable tension gripped travelers to Bonny Island this morning as seven persons were kidnapped by dare-devil hoodlums along the Bonny River in Rivers State.

Kristina Reports learnt from a reliable source within the security sector in Bonny LGA that the incident occurred early morning on Monday, May 6, 2024 around the Dawes Island axis of the River.

Commissioner of Police, Rivers State, Olatunji Disu

An eyewitness, who preferred anonymity, told Kristina Reports that the kidnappers approached their boat, a 20 seater speedboat powered by outboard engines, and ordered the seven persons to cross over to their own speedboat, which is also powered by outboard engines and then zoomed off.

With rescue unavailable at the time of the incident, the hoodlums sped off into the adjoining creeks while the other passengers continued on their journey.

Our source, who said there were no casualties or injuries, further informed that the incident has been reported to the Marine Police in Port Harcourt.

Unconfirmed sources told Kristina Reports that the incident happened about the time some politicians were enroute Bonny from a stakeholders meeting in Port Harcourt, spurring insinuations that the kidnap may be politically motivated.

Today’s incident unfortunately disrupted the almost four years’ record of no incident on the Bonny River given that security agencies in the area had ensured criminals had no breathing space around the Bonny Channel.
