Nigerian forward Owen Chigozie signs first professional contract with FC Utrecht
Nigerian youngster Owen Chigozie has taken a major step in his career after signing his first professional contract with Dutch Eredivisie side FC Utrecht.
The 19-year-old attacker has joined the club from Bundesliga outfit Bayer Leverkusen, putting pen to paper on a deal that will keep him at Utrecht until the summer of 2030.
Owen Chigozie ready for the next stage
Born on June 11, 2007, in Heilbronn, Germany, Chigozie began his football journey in Hoffenheim’s academy before completing a move to Bayer Leverkusen in 2024.
During his time with the German champions, he represented both the Under-17 and Under-19 teams while also featuring in eight UEFA Youth League matches.
Chigozie’s rapid development also earned him opportunities with Germany’s Under-17 and Under-19 national teams.
Last season, he was included in Bayer Leverkusen’s senior matchday squad against SC Freiburg and trained regularly with the club’s first team.
Despite attracting interest from several clubs, the promising forward opted to continue his development in the Netherlands after being convinced by FC Utrecht’s long-term vision.
“The first time I came here, it immediately felt like a warm welcome,” Chigozie told the club’s media channels.
“I think I am strong on the ball and can contribute physically. I am creative and enjoy creating chances, providing assists and scoring goals.”
Focused on development and regular football
Looking ahead to his new challenge, Chigozie said his immediate priority is adapting quickly to his new surroundings while continuing his progress as a player.
The Nigerian talent emphasised that consistent game time is his main objective, regardless of whether it comes with Jong FC Utrecht or the senior team, as he looks to establish himself in the Eredivisie.
His move to FC Utrecht marks the beginning of a new chapter, with the highly rated forward hoping to make his breakthrough in Dutch football after rising through the ranks in Germany.
