Ohaneze Youth Council (OYC), the apex Igbo socio-cultural youth organization has condemned in strong terms the attempted impeachment of the Governor of Rivers State, Siminalayi Fubara.

A statement signed by the President of OYC, Rivers State Chapter, Jocelyn Johiah on Thursday, November 2, 2023, said it was perpetrated by “agents of political destabilization”.

The group called on “all people of good conscience, irrespective of their political leaning, tribe or ethnic extraction, to stand up against this unjust attempt to carry out a civilian coup d’état against the people of Rivers State, using the backdoor of a counterpart legislative arm of government to give their activity the face of legitimacy, whereas their act only represents the personal interest of a few persons with vested interest in the economic fortunes of Rivers State”.

“Governor Sim Fubara represents the equity the riverine communities in Rivers State deserve. These riverine communities have for many years been patient and supportive of the other brother tribe that had dominated the corridors of power in the last 24 years.”

“Ohaneze Youth Council supports and will continue to support equity in the scheme of things. We have decided to rally round him in furtherance of equity in the state. Without being party to tribalizing the issue, OYC Rivers State Chapter observes that the parent body, Ohaneze Ndigbo, regards the Governor and his people as sharing same affinity with Ohaneze people.”

“In that sense, OYC can safely say that Sir Sim Fubara is an Igbo son of riverine extraction.  Ndi Igbo are known for not forsaking their brother. We have heard the cry of a brother in Diaspora, and have decided to use this medium to call on the persons or groups of persons who have arrogated to themselves the right to the estate of Rivers people to back down in the interest of peace. Ndigbo also thrive in hard work and endurance, and we are confident that these attributes would see Sim Fubara through in the task ahead of him.”

“Sim Fubara thus has before him a great challenge and a great opportunity to turn around the fortunes of the state. This can only be with the help of all, and certainly not with the distraction from obviously self-serving few persons whose wish is to overthrow the calmness of a once peaceful state.”

“We are extremely persuaded that if Sim is given the environment of peace, his administration will be the best in the history of Rivers State. Allow Sim Fubara to breathe!”
