The 2023/24 Nigeria Premier Football League Season is set to close its curtains on Sunday, June 23, 2024, with teams fighting to the finish to avoid the drop, to grab continental tickets, and players hunting the golden boot.
The title race was done and won on matchday 37, after Rangers International got a 2-0 victory over Bendel Insurance, amassing 67 points, having recorded 20 wins, seven draws, and 10 defeats. As such, Rangers will represent Nigeria at the 2024/25 CAF Champions League alongside one other NPFL club which will be confirmed at the end of matchday 38.
Remo Stars who sit second with 62 points and Enyimba who sit in third with 60 points are the main contenders for the second Champions League spot.
Shooting Stars who occupy fourth place with 59 points will take on relegation-threatened Sporting Lagos in Ibadan and a win for the host will put them in a poll position to grab a continental ticket if Enyimba loses to Plateau United.
With 20th-placed Gombe United and 19th-placed Heartland already relegated, two clubs who go into matchday 38 looking to avoid the drop, will ultimately join them.
The margins have never been tighter as 13th-placed Kwara United (48 points) and 14th-placed Niger Tornadoes (48 points) are not completely safe from the drop. Nonetheless, the primary contenders for the drop are 15th-placed Bayelsa United (47 points), 16th-placed Akwa United (46 points), 17th-placed Sporting Lagos (46 points), and 18th-placed Doma United (43 points).
The prayer of all the relegation-threatened sides is to avoid defeat on Sunday and hope that their competitors slip.
Doma United who failed to secure a win at home to Sunshine Stars can kiss the NPFL goodbye, as only a win by a large margin against Abia Warriors can guarantee them a place next season.
Sporting Lagos also faces the daunting task of defeating Shooting Stars in Ibadan. The Lagosians would be hoping that Bayelsa United and Akwa United who face midfielders, Bendel Insurance and Rivers United, respectively, lose their games to ensure their place in the NPFL.
The race for the golden boot is still on with Chijioke Mbaoma leading the chase with 16 goals, Sikiru Alimi in touching distance with 15 and Albert Hillary and Jonathan Alukwu with 12.
