The Confederation of Africa Football (CAF) on Wednesday, September 27, 2023, announced Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania as hosts for the 2027 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) at the Cairo Marriott Hotel in Egypt, denying Nigeria the right to host.

Nigeria placed a joint bid with Benin Republic to host the continent’s biggest football competition: AFCON, in 2027.

At the Cairo Marriott Hotel in Egypt, the Executive Committee of CAF disclosed Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania’s joint bid as the winning bid for the hosting of the 2027 AFCON.

Nigeria’s Minister of Sports Development, John Enoh arrived in Egypt on Tuesday with representatives of the Nigeria Football Federation to bid to host AFCON in 2027 but it all came to naught.

Nigeria hosted the Afcon for the first time in 1980. They went on to win the competition – their first title, defeating Algeria 3-0 in the final staged in Lagos.

In 2000, they co-hosted with Ghana; while the Black Stars were booted out in the quarters, the Super Eagles reached the final. They faced Cameroon but lost 4-3 in the penalty shoot-out after a 2-2 draw in regulation and extra time.

To the 2025 AFCON

Morocco won hosting rights for the 2025 AFCON by a whooping 22 votes, with their challengers getting none, replacing Guinea who were stripped of the right to host the tournament last year after they were deemed not ready to host.

It is the second time that Morocco will host the prestigious event after almost four decades, hosting it last in 1988.

This would serve as preparation for the 2030 World Cup if chosen. Recall that, Morocco teamed up with Spain and Portugal to bid for the 2030 World Cup.
