The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) conducted a raid on several markets in Abuja, confiscating cosmetic products valued at ₦37 million.

The agency announced this in a post on its official X (formerly Twitter) handle on Tuesday, October 1, 2024.

It further announced that it conducted operations at Wuse and Garki markets to eliminate counterfeit and illegally imported cosmetic products.

“Acting on intelligence reports, NAFDAC’s Investigation and Enforcement Directorate conducted coordinated raids across supermarkets and open markets including Wuse and Garki markets. Several unregistered and counterfeit cosmetics were seized with a total street value of ₦37 million.”

The agency reaffirmed its dedication to ensuring that products sold in the markets are safe for public consumption.

It emphasized that the presence of counterfeit products has done more harm than good, negatively impacting both the country’s economy and the health of its residents.

The agency stated that the seized items would be destroyed under its rules and regulations to ensure public safety.

Kristina reports visited Wuse Market to ask vendors if they knew the difference between fake and genuine products because understanding this distinction can help them avoid purchasing counterfeit items and prevent wasting money on goods that may be confiscated.

Shockingly, several shop owners do not know the difference between fake and original products.

Simisola who sells toiletries and cosmetics explained that she trusts her supplier to only deliver quality but she does not know the difference.

“I don’t really know the difference but I trust my supplier, she would never give me fake products.”

Jimmy, on the other hand who sells soft drinks and alcohol said that he knows the difference and would never buy fake products.

“Me I can never mistakenly buy fake products i. I have been in this business for too long for somebody to scam me.

“The funny thing is that the differences are very small, if you don’t pay attention, you will not notice. But because i have been doing this business for long, I am able to know the difference.
