Nigeria Honours Christy Essien-Igbokwe 15 Years After Her Death

Nigeria has continued to celebrate the legacy of legendary singer and actress Christy Essien-Igbokwe following the 15th anniversary of her death, with tributes highlighting her enduring contributions to the country’s music and entertainment industry.

The nation marked the milestone on Tuesday, June 30, 2026, exactly 15 years after Essien-Igbokwe died in Lagos on Thursday, June 30, 2011, at the age of 50 after a brief illness.

Widely known as Nigeria’s “Lady of Songs,” Essien-Igbokwe is remembered as one of the pioneers of Afro-pop music whose career helped shape the modern Nigerian music industry and inspired generations of female artistes.

Tributes published on Sunday, July 5, 2026, described her as “Nigeria’s Lady of Songs” and noted that she remains “widely regarded as Nigeria’s original Queen of Afro Pop.”

Throughout her career, Essien-Igbokwe released several successful songs, including Seun Rere, Ever Liked My Person, Give Me a Chance, Hear the Call, Tete Nu Na Ula and Akwa Ibom Mmi, many of which continue to enjoy airplay and streaming years after her death.

Beyond music, she also built a successful acting career and became a familiar face on the popular Nigerian Television Authority sitcom The New Masquerade, where she played the role of Akpenor.

Essien-Igbokwe was also a prominent advocate for musicians’ welfare and made history as the first female president of the Performing Musicians Association of Nigeria, serving from 1996 to 1999.

In recognition of her contributions to the arts and national development, she was conferred with the national honour ofy Member of the Order of the Federal Republic in 1999.

The anniversary tributes further stated:

“Her songs still speak, her legacy continues to inspire, and her name remains etched in the history of Nigerian music as one of its greatest icons.”

Family members, colleagues, fans and admirers also reflected on her influence, describing her as a trailblazer whose achievements opened doors for many women in Nigeria’s music industry.

Fifteen years after her passing, Essien-Igbokwe’s music, advocacy and contributions to Nigeria’s cultural heritage continue to resonate, reinforcing her place among the country’s most celebrated entertainment icons.
