Chairman of Bonny Local Government Area, David Irimagha has called on the Buoye Omuso Brown and Jumbo Major Houses of Bonny Kingdom to pursue peaceful co-existence, mutual understanding and eschew all forms of acrimony in order to achieve the needed development in the area.
Irimagha made this call yesterday at a meeting with representatives of both Houses in his office in Bonny.
In a statement by his Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Williams Ogbah Agwu, the Bonny LG boss called on the elders and youths of both house to sheath their swords for the interest of the project, which he said would be beneficial to both houses and Bonny LGA, in general.
Both chieftaincy houses have been embroiled in a land dispute over the ownership of the Workers Camp, which was allocated as a temporary worksite to Julius Berger Nigeria Limited, the company handling the ongoing construction of the Bonny-Bodo Road project.
The camp was built in 1996 to accommodate workers of different construction companies that were part of the Nigeria Liquefied Natural Gas train 1-6 construction project. Since the end of the project, the camp has remained obsolete, though a section of it was allocated to the joint military taskforce (JTF) in Bonny.
The claims and counter claims over the land on which the camp was built has remained a controversial issue over the years with youths of both house engaging themselves in fisticuffs at different times.
He acknowledged that while the processes of resolving the claims of ownership of the land was still ongoing, the interest of government was for the project to be ongoing in a peaceful atmosphere, noting that this was cardinal to the successful completion of the project.
Representatives of the Buoye Omuso Brown and Jumbo Houses unanimously agreed to toe the path of peace in the interest of the community and for the continuation of the project.
They also resolved to communicate same message to the youths of both houses and to sustain the dialogue for the sustenance of peace and pursuit of issues of mutual interest.
Also present at the meeting were heads and representatives of the various security agencies in the LGA, who were there to observe the proceedings.
