FG Debunks Claims On Speculated NYSC Uniform Change

The Federal Government has clarified that Adire fabric has not yet been approved to replace the khaki uniform worn by members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC).

Minister of Youth Development, Ayodele Olawande, made the clarification on Thursday following widespread reports that the government had adopted Adire as the new official NYSC uniform.

According to the minister, discussions are ongoing on possible reforms to the NYSC scheme, including ways to promote locally made fabrics and support Nigeria’s textile industry, but no final decision has been taken on changing the current uniform.

“Adire has not been approved to replace the NYSC khaki. We are still consulting and reviewing various proposals,” Olawande said.

He explained that his earlier comments about Adire were intended to highlight the potential benefits of patronising Nigerian-made textiles and should not be interpreted as an official policy announcement.

The minister added that any change to the NYSC uniform would follow the appropriate approval process and would be formally communicated to the public by the government and the NYSC management.

“When a decision is reached, Nigerians will be properly informed through official channels,” he said.

The clarification comes amid growing public debate over proposed reforms to the 53-year-old national service scheme, including possible changes to corps members’ deployment and other administrative procedures.

For now, NYSC members will continue to wear the existing khaki uniform pending any future policy directive from the Federal Government.
