Federal Government Issues Flood Alert for 12 States, FCT

The Federal Ministry of Environment has issued a flood alert for several communities across 12 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), warning residents and relevant authorities to prepare for possible flooding between June 8 and June 21, 2026.

The warning was contained in a flood prediction released by the National Flood Early Warning Centre under the Ministry’s Erosion, Flood and Coastal Zone Management Department.

According to the prediction, heavy rainfall expected during the period could trigger flooding in vulnerable communities and surrounding areas.

The affected locations in Benue State include Agbaji, Akoro, Katsina Ala, Abinsi, Agatu River Bank Settlement Cluster, Makurdi and Gboko. In Kogi State, Lokoja and Idah were listed among areas at risk, while Jebba and Kaiama were identified in Kwara State.

The Ministry also placed parts of Lagos State on alert, including Apapa, Badagry, Lagos Island and Lekki.

In Rivers State, Port Harcourt, Bonny and Okrika are expected to experience heavy rainfall that could lead to flooding, while Yenagoa, Brass and Sagbama were listed for Bayelsa State.

Other locations identified include Warri, Burutu and Asaba in Delta State; Onitsha and Atani in Anambra State; Calabar and Ikom in Cross River State; Uyo and Eket in Akwa Ibom State; Benin City and Auchi in Edo State; Gwagwalada in the FCT; and Jos in Plateau State.

The Ministry urged state governments, emergency response agencies, local authorities and residents in the affected areas to remain vigilant and take precautionary measures to reduce the impact of potential flooding.

Director of the Erosion, Flood and Coastal Zone Management Department, Usman Bokani, called on relevant stakeholders to take the warning seriously and provide feedback to the National Flood Early Warning Centre as the situation develops.

The flood prediction forms part of the Federal Government’s ongoing efforts to mitigate the impact of seasonal flooding and improve disaster preparedness across the country.
