Flood Risk Rises In Abuja As Fire Service Warns Residents Against Unsafe Practices
The Federal Fire Service (FFS), Federal Capital Territory Command, has raised a fresh flood alert in Abuja, urging residents to remain vigilant as continued rainfall increases the risk of flooding in vulnerable areas.
The warning was issued on Tuesday, September 29, 2026, by the Controller of the FCT Command, Muhammed Anas, who advised residents, particularly those living in low-lying communities, riverbanks and areas with poor drainage, to take necessary precautions.
Anas cautioned residents against practices that could worsen flooding, including dumping refuse in drains, gutters, canals and waterways.
He also warned against constructing buildings on floodplains, waterways and drainage channels, noting that such activities can obstruct the natural flow of water and increase the risk of flooding.
The FFS urged residents to move to higher ground or other safe locations whenever flooding occurs.
Households in flood-prone areas were also advised to move valuables, important documents, food and other essential items to higher levels. Families were encouraged to prioritise the evacuation of children, elderly persons and people living with disabilities during emergencies.
The Fire Service further warned residents against walking or driving through floodwater, stressing that floodwater may conceal dangerous objects, open drainage channels or other hazards.
Residents were also advised not to drink or use floodwater because of the risk of contamination.
The agency urged members of the public to contact emergency responders immediately when flooding occurs and to avoid returning to affected areas until they are declared safe.
The Federal Fire Service reaffirmed its commitment to protecting lives and property across the FCT while calling on residents to cooperate with emergency responders and report flood incidents promptly.
