Araraume’s Re-emergence Stirs Fresh Tension in Imo APC

Fresh uncertainty has engulfed the All Progressives Congress in Imo State following the re-emergence of former Imo North senator, Ifeanyi Araraume’s name in discussions over the party’s candidate for the Okigwe Zone Senate seat, reigniting political debate despite the party’s insistence that incumbent Patrick Ndubueze remains its recognised flagbearer.

The controversy intensified during the week ending Friday, July 10, 2026, after reports circulated that Araraume’s name had resurfaced in relation to records on the Independent National Electoral Commission’s candidate portal, prompting widespread speculation within political circles and across social media about the authentic APC candidate for the Imo North Senatorial District.

While the reports fuelled fresh conversations, neither INEC nor the national leadership of the APC had officially announced any change in the party’s candidate as of Friday, July 10, 2026.

The development comes barely weeks after the APC conducted its senatorial primary for Okigwe Zone, where Ndubueze emerged from the exercise as the party’s candidate.

Although the primary appeared to have settled the contest, Araraume’s name resurfacing has reopened discussions that many party members believed had already been concluded.

Araraume, a former two-time senator for Imo North and one of the state’s most experienced politicians, had earlier returned to the political scene after a period of relative silence to contest the APC senatorial ticket for the district.

Before the primary election, he was seen in a meeting with Governor Hope Uzodimma, although the purpose of the meeting was never officially disclosed.

Political observers linked the engagement to consultations surrounding the party’s senatorial primary.

Following the primary, Ndubueze was announced as the winner.

However, unconfirmed claims later emerged suggesting that Araraume’s name had appeared in connection with the APC ticket, creating confusion among party supporters and stakeholders.

Those claims were immediately challenged by officials of the Imo APC, who maintained that the outcome of the primary remained unchanged.

Reacting to the renewed speculation, the Imo APC, through its Publicity Secretary, Jones Onwuasoanya, dismissed reports suggesting that Araraume had replaced Ndubueze as the party’s candidate.

The party reaffirmed that Ndubueze remains the APC’s recognised candidate for the Imo North Senatorial District and urged members to disregard contrary reports.

Araraume also publicly distanced himself from a viral statement circulating on social media that claimed he had declared himself the APC candidate for the district.

In a disclaimer issued through his communications office on Wednesday, July 8, 2026, he reaffirmed his commitment to party supremacy and due process.

“As a firm believer in constitutional democracy and party supremacy, Senator Araraume is patiently awaiting the official position and final decision of the party regarding the Imo North Senatorial Primary.”

He further denied authoring a publication titled “A Message of Gratitude, Unity, and a Clarion Call to Rebuild Okigwe Zone,” describing it as false, unauthorised and intended to create unnecessary tension within the party.

According to the statement, he had not declared himself the APC candidate and would only communicate through officially recognised channels.

“He has not declared himself the party’s candidate and will only communicate through recognised and authorised channels.”

Adding another layer to the unfolding political developments, former APC senatorial aspirant Longers Anyanwu, who withdrew from the primary race in support of Ndubueze, has since been appointed a commissioner by the Uzodimma administration.

Reports also indicate that Anyanwu has approached the court over issues arising from the senatorial ticket, insisting that his legal action is intended to prevent any attempt to substitute Ndubueze with another candidate and not a personal action against Araraume.

The renewed controversy has again placed the Okigwe Zone senatorial contest at the centre of political attention in Imo State, with party faithful awaiting official clarification from the appropriate authorities.

As of this report, Friday, July 10, 2026, neither INEC nor the APC national leadership had announced any alteration to the party’s candidate list for the district, leaving Ndubueze as the recognised candidate according to the state chapter, while speculation surrounding Araraume’s name continues to dominate political discourse.
