Alex Ekubo’s Death Devastating Loss to Abia, Nigeria — Otti
Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, has paid tribute to late Nollywood actor Alex Ekubo, describing his passing as a painful loss not only to Abia State but also to Nigeria’s entertainment industry.
The governor spoke during the actor’s funeral service in Arochukwu, on Thursday, June 18, 2026, where family members, friends, colleagues and admirers gathered to bid him farewell.

Represented by his Chief of Staff, the governor said Ekubo distinguished himself through his talent, professionalism and dedication to his craft, earning admiration across Nigeria and beyond.
According to Otti, the late actor remained proud of his Abia heritage throughout his career and used his platform to positively showcase the state to the world.
“Alex Ekubo was more than a movie star.”
“He was a shining example of what determination, hard work and excellence can achieve,” the governor said.
He noted that the actor’s success story served as inspiration to many young Nigerians pursuing careers in the creative industry.
“From humble beginnings in Arochukwu, he rose to become one of the most recognised faces in Nollywood.”
“His journey reminds our young people that greatness is possible when talent meets discipline and commitment,” he added.

The governor further stated that Ekubo’s legacy would endure through the numerous films and memorable roles that endeared him to audiences across Africa.
“His contributions to the entertainment industry will not be forgotten.”
“Through his work, he touched lives, created unforgettable memories and brought pride to his people,” Otti said.
He extended his sympathies to the actor’s widow, parents, siblings and the entire Ekubo-Okwaraeke family, urging them to draw strength from the impact he made during his lifetime.
Alex Ekubo died at the age of 40 after battling complications related to advanced metastatic kidney cancer.

His death sparked an outpouring of grief from colleagues, fans and public figures across the country.
The funeral ceremony attracted several Nollywood stars and industry stakeholders who gathered in Arochukwu to honour the late actor and celebrate his life and achievements.
