Days after his predecessor, Nyesom Wike, threw tantrums in a televised interview, Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara has put those who perceive him as weak on notice that he has surprises awaiting them.

Fubara gave this notice on Wednesday, April 3, 2024 while addressing members of the Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE) from the 23 local government areas of Rivers State on a solidarity rally at Government House Gate in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.

He made it clear that he will surprise those who consider his decision to implement the presidential peace pact as a sign of weakness.

“Let me say it here for record purposes: What is happening here in our dear State is somebody who has respect for an elder.

“Mr. President invited all the parties to Abuja, and came out with a resolution that we should go and implement. That resolution, I am implementing it. It is not a constitutional implementation. It is a political solution to a problem.

“And I am doing it because of the respect I have for Mr President. But, let me say it here, if that action that I have accepted to take would be seen as a weakness, I will surprise them. I want this message to go to them.”

This warning appears to be targeted at Wike and the 27 former members of the Rivers State House of Assembly who threatened to resume impeachment proceedings against the Governor days ago.

Fubara said despite several comments in the Media about his implementation of the peace initiative, he chose to be silent out of maturity and wisdom, stressing that it had become imperative to put the records straight for clarity.

He explained that his acceptance of President Bola Tinubu’s peace pact in the wake of the October 30, 2023 political crisis that engulfed the State, was predicated on his perception of the pact as a political solution rather than a constitutional issue.

He said that the implementation of the agreement, which according to him had since commenced, is borne out of his respect for the President, observing that other political actors appear to have taken his humility and compliance as a sign of weakness.

Speaking, the Rivers State Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Alex Agwanwor warned that NLC will not hesitate to occupy anywhere used by the ex-lawmakers led by Martins Amaewhule, should they attempt another impeachment proceeding against the Governor.

He also warned that organised labour would be forced to withdraw its members working with the former lawmakers, if they decide to throw caution to the wind and attempt any illegality.
