NUJ Urges Issue-Based Campaigns Ahead of 2027 Elections

The Nigeria Union of Journalists, Ebonyi State Council, has called on political actors to embrace issue-based campaigns and shun actions capable of heating up the polity ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The resolution was reached during the council’s congress held on Thursday, July 2, 2026, at the Dr. Sam Egwu Press Centre in Abakaliki and contained in a communiqué released on Friday, July 3, 2026.

The communiqué, jointly signed by the council’s Chairman, Nwafor Samson, and Secretary, Chinaza John, urged politicians to conduct their campaigns within the bounds of the law and focus on issues that affect the people rather than personal attacks.

Congress urged all political actors to “play by the rules” and avoid actions capable of heating up the polity ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The union said issue-based campaigns would promote peaceful elections and strengthen Nigeria’s democratic process.

Beyond politics, the congress commended the Ebonyi State Government for its investment in education, particularly the sponsorship of hundreds of indigenes for local, overseas and doctoral scholarship programmes.

The union urged the government to remain committed to policies aimed at improving the welfare of the people.

“Congress urged him to remain focused in achieving his administration’s lofty dreams aimed at improving the welfare of Ebonyi people,” the communiqué stated.

The congress also expressed concern over delays in the distribution of government farm inputs and appealed to the state government to ensure timely distribution to genuine farmers to enhance agricultural productivity and food security.

As the rainy season intensifies, the union advised residents living in flood-prone communities to comply with safety advisories issued by the Nigerian Meteorological Agency and avoid blocking drainage channels and waterways.

The congress further appealed to the Ebonyi State Government to allocate an alternative parcel of land to the union after the revocation of its three-hectare allocation at the EBSU Pocket Layout, saying the land was intended for a housing estate funded by members.

The union also constituted a five-member committee to recommend an official dress code for members of the council and approved a seven-member committee to coordinate its 2026 Press Week scheduled for September.

The NUJ said its resolutions were aimed at promoting responsible politics, strengthening members’ welfare and supporting policies that would contribute to the overall development of Ebonyi State.
