Okrika, Eleme Leaders Restore Calm After Misunderstanding
Leaders in Okrika and Eleme have restored peace following a misunderstanding involving individuals from both communities, with residents urged to ignore rumours and maintain the long-standing relationship between the neighbouring areas.
The appeal followed a press statement issued on Friday, July 3, 2026, by Onengiye Leonard, founder of the Greater Wakirike Movement, who commended the public, the Rivers State Government and social media influencers from Okrika and Eleme for refusing to escalate the incident.
Leonard said the restraint shown by all parties helped prevent unnecessary tension and the spread of misinformation.
“We commend the general public, Government of Rivers State, as well as social media influencers from Okrika and Eleme, for exercising restraint and refusing to amplify or sensationalize the unfortunate incident that occurred yesterday.”
He stressed that Okrika and Eleme have continued to enjoy a peaceful relationship over the years and should not allow an isolated incident to damage their bond.
“Okrika and Eleme are brothers.”
“We have enjoyed a long-standing and healthy relationship built on mutual respect and peaceful coexistence.”
“We cannot afford to fight ourselves.”
Leonard clarified that the incident did not amount to a communal clash, describing it instead as a misunderstanding between individuals from both communities.
“What happened yesterday was a misunderstanding involving individuals from both communities.”
“It should not be portrayed as a conflict between the people of Okrika and Eleme.”
He disclosed that leaders from both communities had already met, engaged one another and successfully resolved the matter.
“We are pleased to state that leaders from both Okrika and Eleme have already intervened, engaged one another, and restored absolute peace.”
“The situation is calm, and there is no cause for alarm.”
Leonard also urged members of the public to disregard false narratives capable of causing division and instead continue with their lawful activities peacefully.
“We therefore encourage everyone to disregard rumours and inflammatory narratives, remain peaceful, and go about their lawful activities without fear.”
The statement reaffirmed the commitment of stakeholders in both communities to preserving peace and preventing the spread of misinformation that could threaten the existing cordial relationship between Okrika and Eleme.
