Rivers United’s President Federation Cup journey came to a heartbreaking end on Saturday after a dramatic penalty shootout defeat to Nasarawa United in the Round of 16 at Awka Stadium.
The Port Harcourt club showed tremendous character to recover from a two-goal deficit late in the match, only to fall short in the shootout as Nasarawa United secured a 5-3 victory on penalties following a thrilling 2-2 draw in regulation time.
Rivers United’s Federation Cup Fightback Falls Just Short
Fresh from their victory over Enugu Rangers in the previous round, Rivers United started brightly and looked the more dangerous side in the opening stages.
Ubong Friday and Bello Babatunde repeatedly threatened the Nasarawa United defence, creating several promising opportunities.
Despite their attacking intent, Rivers United were unable to convert their chances into goals.
Against the run of play, Nasarawa United struck first moments before halftime when Ugochukwu Leonard found the back of the net to give his side a crucial advantage heading into the break.
Finidi George responded with tactical changes after halftime as Rivers United searched for a way back into the contest.
However, the task became even more difficult in the 68th minute when Ada Umar doubled Nasarawa United’s lead, leaving the Pride of Rivers facing elimination.
Nasarawa United Survive Late Rivers United Comeback in Awka Thriller
With time running out, Rivers United produced a remarkable response that reignited hopes of reaching the quarter-finals.

Substitute Samson Obi sparked the comeback by reducing the deficit just three minutes before stoppage time. The goal lifted the momentum and belief within the Rivers United camp.
As the match entered its closing moments, Handsome Surveyor delivered a dramatic equaliser to complete an incredible turnaround and force the tie into a penalty shootout.
The late goals capped a spirited performance from Rivers United, who refused to surrender despite trailing by two goals deep into the second half.
Unfortunately for the Port Harcourt side, the momentum did not carry over into the shootout. Nasarawa United converted their penalties with composure to claim a 5-3 victory and book their place in the quarter-finals.

Nasarawa United will now face Plateau United in the quarter-finals after surviving one of the most dramatic encounters of the competition so far.
