Ibom Angels Receive Major Boost to Chase President Federation Cup Glory

Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL) side, Ibom Angels have received a significant morale boost in their quest for President Federation Cup success following a surprise visit from Akwa Ibom State Commissioner for Sports, Elder Paul Bassey.

The sports commissioner joined players and officials of the Uyo-based team during their Friday morning training session at the Uyo Township Stadium, congratulating the team on their recent progress in the national competition.

The visit came days after the Ibom ladies secured a place in the quarter-finals of the President Federation Cup following a dramatic victory over Bayelsa Queens in Awka.

The Round of 16 encounter saw Bayelsa Queens take the lead through an own goal by Olayini Wuraola before Mirian Okocha restored parity in the 83rd minute.

The game eventually went to penalties, where Ibom Angels held their nerve to book a place in the last eight.

Addressing the players during the training session, Bassey explained the purpose of his visit and delivered a message of support from the State Governor, Pastor Umo Eno.

“I am here, on behalf of His Excellency, the sports-friendly Governor of Akwa Ibom state, Pastor Umo Eno, to congratulate you on your recent good performances.”

The commissioner revealed that the state government had been impressed by the team’s recent displays and remains committed to supporting them throughout their Federation Cup campaign.

“His Excellency is impressed with you, and I am here to remind you that you are never alone. We’re always with you, and we care about your welfare and well-being.”

With attention now turning to the quarter-finals, Bassey urged the players to remain grounded despite their recent success.

The commissioner encouraged the squad to maintain their focus and continue working hard as they pursue the coveted trophy.

The visit was further highlighted by a cash donation from Bassey to the team, while the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Sports, Mrs Rosemary Ubia, also presented gifts to the players and officials.

Having survived a stern test against Bayelsa Queens, Ibom Angels will now set their sights on an even bigger challenge when they face Heartland Queens in the quarter-finals, with the date and venue yet to be confirmed.
