The Remodelled Uyo Township Stadium is set to be inaugurated by Udom Emmanuel, Akwa Ibom State Governor as he winds up on his last days in office.

The commissioning, which is billed for 2pm on Wednesday, May 24, 2023, will have officials of the Akwa Ibom State Government, Nigeria Professional Football League, Akwa Ibom State Football Association, sportsmen and women, amongst other guests.

The multi-use stadium would be the third Grade A Stadium in Akwa Ibom, a state that has been known for its prowess in building sporting facilities.

The stadium is located close to a major market in Uyo City, the Akpan Andem Market.

The Uyo Township Stadium would add to the already existing standard stadiums; The Godswill Akpabio Stadium and the Eket Stadium, that strut the Akwa Ibom Sports skyline.

The Stadium used to be the home of 2021 NPFL Champions, Akwa United in the 2000s.

One of the many modifications to the stadium is the expansion to a 15,000-capacity stadium, formerly 5,000.

It has an Astroturf playing surface for football matches, Indoor sports halls for Judo, Weightlifting, Taekwondo, Boxing, Wrestling, etc. and an Olympic size swimming pool.

The stadium has been a centre for social, cultural, political, and religious events in the past and has been the venue for the popular annual Akwa Ibom Christmas Carol, organized by the Akwa Ibom State Government.
