Security Operatives Arrests 21 Suspected Drug Peddlers During Anti-Drug Raid in Abia

A joint security operation involving the Nigerian Army, Navy, and Air Force has led to the arrest of 21 suspected drug traffickers in Owaza, located in Ukwa West Local Government Area.

The suspects were apprehended during a coordinated sweep of the Owaza Mammy Market and nearby hideouts following intelligence reports linking the area to illicit drug sales and other criminal activities.

Military authorities disclosed that the operation was executed by troops of the 144 Battalion (Rear) under Operation Eastern Sanity, alongside personnel of the Nigerian Navy Component and the Nigerian Air Force 511 Quick Response Group.

According to the military, operatives sealed off strategic entry and exit points around the market before carrying out searches within the area and adjoining bushes believed to be used by criminal elements.

Items recovered during the raid reportedly included wraps of Indian hemp, rizzlers, suspected hard substances known locally as “ice,” as well as cash amounting to ₦103,000.

The Army said the operation formed part of ongoing efforts to dismantle networks allegedly involved in pipeline vandalism, illegal bunkering, and drug trafficking within the region.

The arrested individuals are currently being screened and are expected to be transferred to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency for further investigation and prosecution.

Security forces also stated that surveillance and patrol activities have been intensified across surrounding communities to prevent criminal groups from regrouping.
