ZAMORA, SPAIN Portuguese international and Liverpool FC forward, Diogo Jota, has tragically died in a fatal car accident in northwestern Spain. He was 28.

The crash occurred just after midnight on the A‑52 motorway near Cernadilla, in the Zamora province. According to local authorities, the vehicle in which Jota was traveling with his younger brother, André Silva, veered off the road and burst into flames. Both brothers died at the scene.

Spanish investigators suspect the car’s tyre may have blown out while attempting to overtake another vehicle, causing the loss of control and the subsequent fatal crash.

Jota had recently celebrated his wedding to long-time partner, Rute Cardoso, and leaves behind three young children. The couple had tied the knot just two weeks earlier in a private ceremony attended by close family and friends.

Jota, who joined Liverpool FC in 2020 from Wolverhampton Wanderers, was a key part of the club’s recent success, including their Premier League triumph in the 2024–25 season, the FA Cup, and the League Cup.

He made 182 appearances and scored 65 goals for the Merseyside club.

On the international stage, Jota earned 49 caps for Portugal, scoring 14 goals. He played in multiple European Championships and Nations League matches, becoming a fan favorite for his relentless energy and finishing skills.

Liverpool FC released an official statement expressing deep sorrow:

“We are devastated by the sudden loss of Diogo. He was not only a gifted footballer but also a beloved member of our family. Our thoughts are with his wife, children, and the entire Jota family.”

The Portuguese Football Federation also confirmed his death and announced that a minute of silence would be observed before Portugal’s opening match at the Women’s Euro 2025 tournament.
