The Wastes Management Society of Nigeria (WAMASON) says it would continue with its efforts in concert with the Nigeria Environmental Society (NES) at getting the National Assembly to pass the bill establishing the Institute of Environmental Practitioners of Nigeria (IEPN).

President of WAMASON, Chief Akpabio Esien, AmbGW, said this is a message commemorating the 2023 World Environment Day exclusively obtained by Kristina Reports.

In the message, Chief Esien averred that given that the move to pass the IEPN Bill into law was not concluded with the 9th National Assembly, the Society would engage the incoming 10th Assembly to push for its legislation.

He stressed that in line with WAMASON’s mission of creating awareness on proper wastes management through campaigns and advocacy, the Society aligns with the global effort at reducing the pervasive use of plastics.

Describing this year’s theme, ‘Beat Plastic Pollution’ as apt, he said there was the need to emplace critical institutions such as the IEPN to drive the obviation of certain types of wastes like plastics that have more than ordinary potential to damage the environment.

He stressed that the Society also tries to influence the different levels of government through the ministries, departments and agencies tasked with managing the environment, pointing ou that this requires making enabling laws and regulations to encourage proper wastes management.

He further informed that “WAMASON in collaboration with NES is sponsoring IEPN Bill to bring framework towards proper wastes management and environmental practice in Nigeria”.

He also revealed that part of his policy thrust during his term in office was to “strengthen the governance structure – Board of Trustees, National Executive Council, College of Councillors, and so on”, and also “carry out digitalisation of the organisation’s processes and improve the training capacity of WAMASON”.

“I also want WAMASON to participate in regional and international waste management programmes; as well as to institutionalise waste management and environmental practices in Nigeria through a Joint Bill on Institute of Environmental Practitioners of Nigeria (WAMASON and NES)”.

“My leadership will also encourage proper waste management strategies by influencing federal and state ministries of environment and waste management agencies, and so on.”

On the global drive to ban single-use plastics, the WAMASON President said the Society identifies with the move, stressing that single-use plastics constitute a mortal danger to the environment given their multiplicity, disposability rate and non-dissoluble nature.

He assured that WAMASON would continue to partner with government at all levels to promote policies and programmes that aim at protecting the environment.
