The National Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ) says giving opportunity to women to participate in politics would enhance their capacity to right societal ills and also further good causes in the society.
Chairperson of NAWOJ in Rivers State, Susan Serekara-Nwikhana said this on Thursday, February 18, 2021, in an interview with Kristina Reports on the sidelines of the 7th Triennial Delegates Conference of the Association in Port Harcourt.
According to her, having proved their mettle as successful managers of the home front, women can do much better managing critical aspects of society such as public office either as appointees or elected officials.
“I want women to see that politics is not meant for the men only. If we can manage our homes, then we can be well managers in politics also.”
“Therefore, I want us to see politics as a place where we can fight a common goal by kicking against the ills of the society by lending our voices where necessary.”
Serekara-Nwikhana, who indicated her administration’s resolve in encouraging women participation in politics in order to display their potentials, enumerated gender-based violence, violation of the girlchild, workplace sexual harassment, ignorance, unfair labeling, stigmatization, and other gender-based objectifications as ills that can be corrected when women occupy leadership positions.
She disclosed her intensions to consolidate on the milestones achieved by the previous administrations of NAWOJ in the State towards ensuring that women seamlessly take their rightful place in destiny.
“…take, for instance, what (Ngozi) Okonjo-Iweala is doing. She is a model to reckon with and that is what I want every woman to look at. That has been my drive, because I started as an Assistant Secretary to being Financial Secretary and then Treasurer. I was determined that I must climb to this point and reach the society via NAWOJ.”
The NAWOJ State Chairperson called on all relevant stakeholders synergize with the association by generating ideas capable of moving women journalists to greater heights.
