The Ancient Kingdom of Grand Bonny in Bonny Local Government Area of Rivers State was thrown into mourning amidst uproar over the killing of a Chief-elect in the area, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Oliver Inoma-Abbey by persons suspected to be members of the proscribed terrorist group, Independent People of Biafra (IPOB).

The incident occurred when in the course of his duty as Area Commander in charge of Oraifite in the Anambra State Police Command, ACP Oliver Inoma-Abbey, alongside his men, responded to a distress call to forestall a kidnap incident in Oraifite in Ekwusigo Local Government Area of Anambra State.

Meanwhile, there was palpable tension among people of Igbo extraction in Bonny LGA over fears of reprisal attacks on them by youths of the community who feel pained over the gruesome murder of their Chief.

The late Oliver Inoma-Abbey was to be installed Chief and Head of the Abbey-Hart Chieftaincy House of Bonny Kingdom before he was murdered and burnt alive by suspected members of IPOB with support of youths of Oraifite Community in Ekwusigo LGA of Anambra State.

Bonny LGA, an island community, plays host to multinational oil and gas firms such the Nigeria Liquefied Natural Gas (NLNG), Shell Nigeria, Mobil Producing Nigeria Limited, Chevron Plc, among others and consequently have a large Igbo community in the area.

Way back in history, the ancestors of the Bonny people bought slaves from Igbo land who were helpful in domestic duties and business ventures, a trend which metamorphosed into intermarriages and business interactions over the years.

This agelong relationship between the Bonny people and the Igbo ethnic nationality seems threatened with this recent incident as there were several Igbo indigenes residing in Bonny, working in the multinational oil and gas firms or doing business there.

Even during the Nigerian Civil War when Biafran soldiers allegedly tortured indigenes and residents of the area as part of Lt. Col. Odumegwu Ojukwu’s quest to conquer the area in order to annex the Bonny crude oil terminal (BCOT) owned by the then British Petroleum and later Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC), things did not get so bad. The Biafran soldiers were later routed from Bonny by 3rd marine commando led by Brig Gen. Benjamin Adekunle.

An elder of the Abbey-Hart House, who preferred anonymity, warned that “thoughtless actions such as the one that led to the gruesome murder of our Chief-elect can cause a breakdown of law and order and engender crisis between the Bonny and Igbo people”.

He pointed out that it was a dastardly action and an unforgivable action for them to not only attack police officers on duty but burn them alive, stressing that “this won’t go down well with us”.

“The Oraifite Community has to come and explain to us what happened to our brother, father, uncle and highly respected Chief-elect”.
