Students of the University of Calabar, Calabar in Cross Rivers State have taken a stand against the 100% increase in tuition fees by the management of the institution.
Kristina Reports gathered that the students led by the Student Union Government (SUG) engaged in a mass protest against the management’s decision on Monday, December 8, 2023 in the campus.
Addressing his fellow students during the protest, the SUG President, Godgift Kichi-Akwo Ukyi-Osowo charged them not to comply with the decision of the school authority immediately, saying efforts would be made to persuade the management to reverse the increment.
“Make nobody pay first, where you wan see that kind of money, from N47,000 to N147,000. So make una never pay first, make we dey look as e go be.”
A press release from the Student Union Government (SUG) emphasized the need to maintain an inclusive and supportive campus environment, stressing that all concerns must be brought to a resolution.
One of the students, Esther Elebe related to Kristina Reports that the idea was birthed out of necessity laid on the authorities to make the institution standard.
She said that a press release from the Registrar’s Office explained that the increment was aimed at raising funds for renovation of certain aspects of the institution.
“It was for renovation of school library and also to get more electronics devices for the school system.”
Efforts by Kristina Reports to reach the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Florence Ovi, and other relevant authorities on the development proved abortive as at press time.
