The Headies Shifts Toronto Finale to April 2027, Expands Nigeria–Canada Programme

The organisers of The Headies have rescheduled the 18th edition of the music awards from Friday, October 23, 2026, to Saturday, April 10 and Sunday, April 11, 2027, in Toronto, Canada, to allow for an expanded programme of music, industry engagement and business activities across Nigeria and Canada.

The announcement was made in a statement dated Thursday, October 8, and published on the awards’ official website on Saturday, October 10, 2026, confirming that the Toronto finale would now conclude a broader programme under the theme “Africa to the World”.

The organisers said activities under the Road to The Headies initiative would continue during the originally scheduled event period, with workshops, seminars and industry engagements planned to connect artistes, nominees and other stakeholders ahead of the rescheduled finale.

“The road to the 18th Headies continues. We’re expanding the programme in Nigeria and Canada ahead of our Toronto finale, now scheduled for Saturday, April 10 and Sunday, April 11th, 2027,” the organisers stated.

The revised dates move the main ceremony by nearly six months from its original Friday, October 23, 2026, schedule, while the organisers prepare additional activities intended to strengthen the connection between African music and international markets.

Ayo Animashaun, founder of The Headies, said the awards were created to recognise talent and work driving the music industry, adding that the expanded programme would bring music creators into closer contact with people and institutions capable of supporting the sector’s growth.

“The Headies was created to recognise the talent and work driving our music industry,” Animashaun said.

He explained that the awards would remain central to the programme, while the wider engagements would create opportunities to connect music, business and investment.

A major component of the expanded programme is the Headies Global Trade and Investment Summit, which is designed to connect African businesses, investors, government representatives and creative-industry leaders with international markets, capital and strategic partners.

The summit is expected to place discussions on trade, investment and the creative economy alongside the celebration of musical achievements, although the organisers have yet to publish the complete programme, confirmed venues and participation details for April 2027.

The postponement has also raised practical concerns for guests who had already made travel arrangements for the original October date.

The organisers acknowledged the inconvenience and apologised to affected guests, promising further information on the revised programme and arrangements.

“We recognise the inconvenience this change causes, particularly for guests who have committed time and resources to joining us in Toronto,” the organisers said.

They added, “We sincerely apologise and appreciate their patience.”

The statement did not specify whether tickets purchased for the original date would automatically remain valid for the April ceremony or whether refunds would be available to guests unable to attend the rescheduled event.

It also did not announce changes to the nominees list, award categories or voting deadlines, leaving those details subject to further clarification through the awards’ official communication channels.

The 18th edition’s nominees were announced on Friday, August 25, 2026, ahead of the originally scheduled ceremony, with the postponement announcement making no declaration that the existing nominations had been withdrawn.

The organisers said further announcements would provide the calendar for the remaining Road to The Headies activities and details of the Toronto finale.

Established in 2006 as the Hip Hop World Awards, The Headies recognises achievements in Nigerian music and celebrates artistes and industry professionals contributing to the growth of the sector.

The awards have previously held international editions in Atlanta, United States, before returning to Nigeria for the 17th edition in April 2025.

With the 18th edition carrying the theme “Africa to the World”, the organisers are positioning the Toronto programme as an opportunity to combine musical recognition with international creative-industry engagement and business exchange.

The rescheduled finale is now expected to take place on Saturday, April 10, and Sunday, April 11, 2027, in Toronto, Canada.
