‘A Demanding Privilege’: Stephen Manyo Speaks on Taking the Armband at Rivers United

Following the departure of former skipper Temple Emekayi at the expiration of his contract, Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) runners-up Rivers United have officially ushered in a new leadership era.

Center-back Stephen Manyo has been handed the captain’s armband ahead of the 2026/27 campaign, with star forward Chijioke Mbaoma stepping into the role of vice-captain.

Reflecting on the appointment by manager Finidi George, Manyo expressed deep gratitude while acknowledging the immense pressure that comes with the territory.

“It’s a privilege for me because coming this far to become the captain of Rivers United is not an easy task because it’s demanding. It’s a big club, one of the biggest clubs in Africa,” Manyo shared.

“This position is going to be a demanding one from the club, the management, and my teammates. I have to be a good example…”

Manyo has rapidly become a cornerstone for the Pride of Rivers since arriving in August 2024. Last season, he proved to be a highly reliable asset at both ends of the pitch:

NPFL: Made 30 appearances, netting 3 goals.

CAF Champions League: Featured in 10 matches, scoring twice—including a spectacular effort against Pyramids FC that won CAF’s Goal of the Day.

Under his leadership, the Finidi George-led squad will be hunting for silverware on three distinct fronts this season: the domestic NPFL title, the President Federation Cup, and the CAF Champions League.
