The Rivers State Police Command has strongly condemned the assault on members of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) by some police officers during a recent protest.
The Command has announced that a full investigation is underway to uncover the facts surrounding the incident.
“The Command unequivocally condemns this unfortunate incident and has commenced a full and thorough investigation into the matter”.
According to a statement issued on Wednesday, April 2025 by the Police Public Relations Officer, Grace Iringe-Koko, the Command received complaints from the Nigeria Union of Journalists regarding the incident and has already identified some officers involved, who are currently being questioned.
“Preliminary findings have led to identification of some personnel who are currently undergoing questioning as part of the ongoing inquiry.”
The statement clarified that the police were aware of the planned protest and had deployed officers to ensure the safety of all participants, including journalists and members of the public.
It added that the presence of security personnel helped prevent the protest from being hijacked by criminal elements.
The Rivers State Police Command emphasized its high regard for journalists, acknowledging their vital role in promoting peace, security, and public awareness. The command also expressed regret over the incident, stating that it does not reflect the values of the Force.
The Command assured the NUJ and the public that the investigation will be thorough and transparent, with findings to be made public once concluded. It reaffirmed its commitment to professionalism, human rights, and its zero-tolerance policy on misconduct within the Force.
“We assure the NUJ, its members, and the general public that this matter will be treated with the seriousness it deserves and will not be swept under the carpet. Upon the conclusion of investigations, the Command will make public its findings and the measures taken to address the situation.”
“We dissociate ourselves from any form of overzealous or unprofessional conduct and reiterate our zero-tolerance stance on such behaviour.”
Iringe-Koko thanked the NUJ and the public for their continued cooperation and understanding as the Command works to uphold justice and maintain trust.
