Seven-time Nigeria Women’s Football League Champions, Rivers Angels are set to take on Naija Ratels on Saturday, June 29, 2024, at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena, Lagos, by 1 pm in the final of the President Federation Cup.
Rivers Angels have won the cup a record eight times, having only failed to win just one edition between 2010 and 2018. They were also runners-up in 2002, 2008, 2019 and 2023.
Meanwhile, Naija Ratels is the first club from Abuja in 24 years to reach the women’s final of the Cup. In 2000, FCT Queens lost to the same Rivers Angels in the final.
With Naija Ratels being in existence for five years and Rivers Angels winning the Federation Cup three years more than their opponents have been on the grind, the Angels are clear favourites but coach of the Naija Ratels, Bankole Olowookere, has said that no team is unbeatable.
“For sure, we are the distinct underdogs against Rivers Angels that have won this trophy eight times before now. But no team is unbeatable. We have a plan and a strategy to emerge champions on Saturday. We want to do this for our proprietor and for our supporters who have been with us through victory and defeat, through thick and thin. I can assure you that Naija Ratels are determined to make history.”
Rivers Angels coach, Whyte Ogbonda will be gunning for his first National Cup title as head coach, having guided unfancied Ibom Angels to runners-up position in 2017 and 2018. On both occasions, they lost to Rivers Angels. The strategist has tasted victory previously, albeit as assistant coach, when Rivers Angels won the trophy in 2014.
Coach of the Angels, Ogbonda insists that his girls, who include in their ranks Nigeria U20 girls’ forward Blessing Okpe and Flamingos’ forward Peace Effiong, will not underrate Naija Ratels, but will go all out to accomplish victory.
Rivers Angels booked their place in the grand finale by seeing off Delta Queens 2-1 in Awka while Naija Ratels overcame a penalty shootout in a 7-6 win in Enugu after both teams were tied at 2-2 in regulation time.
Before the semi-final clashes, the Port-Harcourt-based side cruised into the last four of the tournament in flying fashion, after a 5-0 thumping of Osun Babes in Enugu while Naija Ratels scaled through a penalty shootout, defeating FC Robo Queens of Lagos, 5-4 at the Stephen Keshi Stadium in Asaba.
Rivers Angels have had a smoother run on their path to the final, getting the business done in regulation time, but their counterparts Naija Ratels have been pushed to the limits – having to play penalty shootouts.
The Port Harcourt side will hope to avoid a repeat of last year’s final which they lost to Bayelsa Queens when they take on Naija Ratels and the Abuja-based side would be looking to make history
