Remo Stars Secure First-Ever NPFL Win Over Rivers United in 9 Games

Rivers United fell to a 2-1 defeat against Remo Stars in Ikenne on Monday, May 6, 2024, in a rescheduled match day 21 encounter to hand Remo Stars their first-ever win in nine games against the Port Harcourt-based side in the Nigerian Premier Football League.

Rivers United made the trip to Ikenne in search of a victory, and after taking the lead in the 19th minute through Andy Okpe, from the spot, it looked like a victory was on the cards. The facade lasted up until the end of the first half.

The Pride of Rivers had a reality check when Haruna Hadi slotted in a low cross by Franck Mawuena for the equaliser.

In the 83rd minute, Franck Mawuena who had previously provided the assist for Hadi’s equaliser, got what ultimately became the winning goal for the Sky Blue Stars when he nodded in a corner kick by Adams Olamilekan at the near post.

The Togolese, Franck Mawuena, who had been sidelined for five months due to injury came off the bench to register an assist for the equaliser and scored the winning goal.

Rivers United sit in 13th position on the NPFL log with 40 points from 28 matches and four outstanding games left to play. Meanwhile, Remo Stars’ pursuit of the NPFL title received a boost as the win propelled them to second place, just one point behind league leaders Rangers International.

Rivers United will look to return to winning ways when they make a trip to Ilorin to confront Kwara United in a Nigeria Premier Football League rescheduled matchday 23 fixture on Thursday, May 9, 2024.
