By Samuel Fubaraibi Jumbo

Dec 31, 2023

Captured in one photo, and in stunning bold relief were the choreographed flicker of paddles, the razzmatazz of colourful blue-green hue of uniforms, paddles and accessories, the enchanted ethereal pose of the head of paddlers as if engaging the deities of the deep, and apparent listening ambience of the sea.

In that one shot, the photographer gave would-be viewers of that photo so much to inspire the imagination, and to mentally revel in. The instant tumultuous reaction that greeted the photo across online platforms was not surprising.

A PICTURE WORTH A THOUSAND WORDS!

This spurred the management of Kristina Reports to seek him out, whoever he was and find ways of according him due regard owing to the stunning excellence and creativity he has exuded in that one shot.

Here we present him to our dear audience alongside the story of photographic sojourn.

Samuel Fubaraibi Jumbo

I am Samuel Fubaraibi Jumbo, widely recognized in the industry as Opus. Born on Sunday, June 4, 2000 into the family of late Senibo Fubaraibi Caleb Jumbo of Ayambo Community in Bonny LGA of Rivers State, my photographic journey began in 2021 at Cedars ProHub, Bonny Island.

While there, I underwent comprehensive training in camera operation and photo editing for a month. On the side, I had also learnt scaffolding and pipe fitting.

Prior to these, in my academic sojourn I had attended Favourite High School, and Bonny National Grammar School, both in Bonny, and Margaret Ekpo International School, Calabar, Cross River State.

My enduring passion for photography led me to embrace this opportunity for learning, despite initial financial constraints. Delving into the basics during the free training period, I found immense joy in honing my skills.

Seeking further expertise, I approached a well-respected photographer, visuals editor and travel visual story teller, Monday Inemesit, for additional guidance. His practical sessions not only enhanced my understanding but also spurred me to showcase my newly acquired skills online, leading to my first client booking for a birthday shoot in May, 2021.

Continuous learning and practice through online resources marked my growth, gradually garnering clients while initially charging N500 per picture. Despite lacking necessary personal equipment, I persevered, renting gear while remaining steadfast in my passion, culminating in my recognition at BEA 2021 as the Next Rated Photographer of the Year.

In 2022, significant strides were made as I secured contracts for traditional marriages, Iria ceremonies, and white weddings, both locally and across state borders.

Collaborations with esteemed creatives- Inem Signatory, MB Multimedia Studios, YB Photography (where I learnt Photo Editing, Content Creation, etc. like a Pro), Bography, Skcella Studio & Craft, and Bob Shots (Amaopusenibo Dennis Ezekiel-Hart) – elevated my brand, highlighted during World Photography Day in 2022 and 2023.

In 2023, I had the privilege of capturing noteworthy events such as the Amanyanabo Football Tournament and Bonny Kingdom Boat Regatta (BKBR), capturing remarkable shots credited to the founder and Executive Director of The Creed, Rossphilip Irims.

Gratitude is extended to God for constant inspiration and guidance throughout these three years of my foray into the industry. My family, particularly, my late father, Senibo Fubaraibi Caleb Jumbo, my unwaveringly supportive mother, and encouraging siblings – deserve heartfelt acknowledgment.

In conclusion, appreciation is extended to all who have contributed to my journey and growth.

Warm regards,

I remain Samuel Fubaraibi Jumbo, aka Opus Photographee
