The Chairman of Okrika Local Government Area of Rivers State, Achese Igwe has admonished students to study hard to better the society.
The Chairman made this call to students on Monday, December 2, 2024 during a one-day seminar at the Council Multi-Purpose Hall, to commemorate the 2024 World AIDS DAY organised by the Vice Chairman, Dinah Gibson.
In his address, he emphasized that AIDS is not a good thing and there’s a need to sensitize people about its spread.
“AIDS is not a good thing, good health is wealth so I’ll advice everyone of you to work hard so you can become better people.”
The Chairman also promised to pay the WAEC fee for all candidates, promising scholarship to those who would come out with good results.
In her address, the Vice Chairman, Dinah Gibson said the sensitization was to promote growth and stability in the society.
Speaking also, Chisa Neriton, the keynote speaker emphasized that the spread of the disease constitutes nuisance. She however added that it is not the end of life, hence the sensitization.
“The theme for this year’s world AIDS day celebration is ‘take the right path’. We have 39.9 million infected people. There are risk factors involved in contacting this virus. You have a right to health, we should be advocates so we can as well educate our family and friends.
Speaking with Kristina Reports, the Desk Officer, School Health Services in the Okrika LGA, Tombotamunoke Kalaiyo, said there are actual damages that could be done if these issues are not addressed.
“It’s a wake-up call and to educate these ones on the dangers of pre-marital sex because that’s one way these virus is contacted. So we’re doing the much we can to arrest the situation.”
Reacting, Deborah Sankey, the Female Senior Prefect of Excel Comprehensive College, Okrika, expressed her joy, stating the she has gained a lot by attending the seminar.
I have been exposed to so many risks involved in contacting this virus. I will also do well to tell my family members and friends, educate them so they can be aware.”.
