Ogbomoso-Born Tanker Driver Risks Life to Save Iwo from Possible Inferno

A 38-year-old tanker driver from Ogbomoso, Oyo State, Alagbe Hezekiah, has been hailed for his bravery after risking his life to prevent a burning fuel tanker from causing a major disaster in Iwo, Osun State.

According to reports, the incident occurred on Thursday, September 17, 2026, at Feesu Junction, along the Iwo-Ibadan Expressway, opposite Lado Filling Station in Iwo. Hezekiah, who was at the filling station to supply diesel, reportedly had the tanker hose connected for offloading when fire suddenly erupted from the truck.

Hezekiah explained that he and his motor boy initially attempted to put out the fire using a fire extinguisher, but the intensity of the flames overwhelmed their efforts. According to him, as the fire spread towards the filling station, nearby shops and residential buildings, his apprentice reportedly fled the scene.

Faced with the possibility of a major explosion and loss of lives, Hezekiah made the decision to drive the burning tanker away from the populated area. Recounting the incident, he said:

“I thought of what I can do to avert putting lives of many and properties at risk. I drove the vehicle out of the petrol station. I scanned the area for where there are no people living. I decided to drive to a riverbank where there will be no casualties,” he narrated.

He further explained that he was fully aware that the decision could cost him his life.

“I took the bold step with the conviction that I may survive or be consumed and die with the incident. However, sacrificing my life to save properties and other people’s lives would be better than risking others with the incident.”

Hezekiah reportedly drove the flaming tanker away from the filling station and through the road, with fire engulfing the rear section of the vehicle. He eventually reached a relatively safe, uninhabited riverbank area, where he detached the head of the truck from the burning tanker, preventing the fire from spreading further.

Eyewitnesses at Odo-Ori Market were quoted as saying that the driver’s quick action helped prevent what could have resulted in extensive destruction at Feesu Junction, an area surrounded by filling stations, businesses and residential buildings.

Hezekiah, who has been driving tankers since 2004, said he had more than 22 years of experience behind the wheel but had never encountered such a situation before. His action has since attracted commendation, with many describing him as a symbol of courage, selflessness and professionalism.

The tanker driver also appealed to the Oyo and Osun State Governments to address the deplorable condition of roads in the two states. He equally advised fellow tanker drivers to always prioritise safety and human life in the discharge of their duties.

His action has drawn attention to the risks faced by tanker drivers and the potential consequences of tanker fires around densely populated areas.
